Bernard chosen as "New Jersey's Greatest Drummer. Read about it in the Asbury Park Press.
1. Bernard “Pretty” Purdie (Springfield) — Perhaps there’s no greater praise for a drummer than to have a beat named after you. For Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, it’s the Purdie Shuffle, a syncopated drumming accent that gives a song a special flair. You can hear it on Steely Dan’s “Home at Last,” courtesy of Purdie, and the beat has been used numerous times, including on Led Zeppelin’s “Fool in the Rain” and Toto’s “Rosanna.” If you don’t know Purdie by name, you’ve heard him play — and that’s a guarantee. He’s kept the beat for everyone from Mickey & Sylvia to Aretha Franklin. Some of his favorite records he’s played on include Franklin’s “Until You Come Back to Me,” the Five Stairsteps “O-o-h Child,” Hall and Oates’ “She’s Gone” and “But It’s Alright” by J.J. Jackson. “I loved it,” said Purdie previously to the Asbury Park Press of recording “But It’s Alright.” “J.J. Jackson, the guy who wrote it, he was the one singing and he was also the one playing the piano. It was my band who made the record.” Purdie is a native of Maryland who moved to New York City in 1960, where he found drumming stardom. Since then, he’s lived in Teaneck and Edison before settling in at his current home in Springfield. This musical giant is very comfortable in Jersey and often plays gigs at spots like McLoone’s Supper Club in Asbury Park or Giamano’s Restaurant in Bradley Beach. If you see that he’s playing, go. Purdie is an icon of American popular music — and Jersey’s greatest drummer.

June 7, 2016. Bernard Purdie at Sam Ash in Springfield, NJ
From George W. Rigney General Manager – Springfield, New Jersey
Hey Folks, We've done some killer clinics in our time here in Springfield, this one was one for the history books. We have about 150 people in attendance, one of the best attended clinics we've ever had. Bernard is like family here in this store so it was a real honor and privilege to have him perform. Our course he decided to bring along a killer 5 piece band to keep it real. ..and it was real, real funky, real pocket. Rob Paparozzi on vocals & harmonica, Miho Nobuzane piano, Frankie Cicala on guitar and Tetsuya Sato on Bass. The band played lots of tunes and only scratched the surface of the vast Bernard Purdie catalog. Some of the tunes featured were The Chicken, Mr. Magic (Grover Washington) and of course to demonstrate the Bernard "Pretty" Purdie shuffle we had Home at Last (Steely Dan). Bernard took the time to stand up and answer questions and tell amazing stories and give great advice. We had at least 75 people waiting in line to get autographs after the show and Bernard stayed well after the clinic to meet with every one of them. Bernard is not just a great drummer but he's a musical historian, Guru and true gentleman. When Bernard speaks he preaches the truth about how drummers should play and how drummers should act and be professionals in every sense of the word. People who come to a Bernard Purdie clinic not only get to see a great clinic but they leave with an education in music history and musical enlightenment. It was a real special night here at Sam Ash Springfield one that will be remembered for a long time.

Gene McCormick and Jack Hoban (Rogues on the Run) were local Jersey Shore musicians from the same zip codes as Bon Jovi and Springsteen, except that they represented the jazz and R&B offering from that magical and musically fertile part of the country. Playing at the Jazz & Blues festival in Red Bank with their band "Jersey Blue," they were heard by Bernard "Pretty" Purdie, the world's most recorded drummer with credits that include Aretha Franklin, Steely Dan, Hall & Oates, Alan Jackson, B. B. King, etc. After the show Purdie told them "you have a new drummer," and off they went to Home Base studios in NYC, where Purdie had recorded the seminal "Abandoned Luncheonette," with Hall & Oates. Joined by some of the best studio musicians in NYC, they recorded "Jersey Blue." Jersey Blue is a diverse and magical set of songs, with some of the finest drumming of Purdie's long and illustrious career. Jersey Blue covers R&B to Jazz to Rock to Country. And, of course, the Purdie Shuffle!

Hello Friends & Fans
It is almost Thanksgiving....
A time to reflect on the hectic year of 2009, to stop, to thank one and all for the enrichment you brought to my life. In teaching I received the benefit of the wonderful energy the students put forth and it bolsters my resolve to keep on teaching and sharing the gift I have been blessed with. Being on Broadway again brought back many memories and has re-connected me with many old friends. In travels to Europe and South America new friends were made, a special "hello" to Marco, Danillo, Laura, Daniele, Ale, Sergio and many, many more who made touring such a wonderful experience.
Hope this challenging year brought you enrichment and new resolve to go forth and enjoy the upcoming year.
Peace always...... Bernard Purdie

The Rock Club.
- All you former "garage band," college & high school band
members dust off your instruments
and revitalize your musical skills.
Here is an opportunity for hobby musicians to get out and play, sharpen their chops, practice, and finally
play a gig in front of family and friends at a premiere Hollywood venue at the end of the program.
So maybe you won't be the new Johnny Cash, Branford Marsalis or Edgar Winter. But this is an opportunity
to build upon what you already know, with guidance and leadership by my professional musician friends at
Frank McIlquham's The Rock Club Performance Program.
This is a new concept in the U.S. and based in Long Beach, CA. (soon to be started in other cities).
I am impressed with the possibilities. Check it out for yourself www.therockclub.net.
Music is universal, music heals, music for peace......Be part of it.
